Weekend Living: Savannah
Mimi Cay, Argyll & Jasper Antiques
"I like things that have a story—unusual, dramatic things," says Mimi Cay as she navigates through her 1850s townhouse that she's transformed into an antiques shop. The Savannah native who once wielded her wares as a dealer at The Stalls has since spent time in Europe studying painting in Lacoste, France, and more recently in London where the idea of opening Argyll & Jasper began brewing.
Located in Savannah's downtown design district, this historic space couldn't possibly be better suited for Cay's unique finds. A pair of lamp bases incorporating three 18th-century bookends bearing the gold stamped University of Oxford crest; the paint-peeling benches with gold hoofed feet she's recovering in silk; or the Chinese calligraphy brush—you can be sure there's an intriguing story behind both the object and its purchase.
The parlor-level shop's layout (complete with catering kitchen, two fireplaces and a bedroom) is the perfect environment for the series of receptions Cay hosts after unloading her containers from Europe, when she invites dealers and designers for cocktails to unveil her new treasures (subsequent visitors must make an appointment.) "I can be a great source for people who don't have time to travel to London, to Italy to find what they're looking for," says Cay.
